HEART Test

A new year means lots of different things. It can mean a fresh start. It can mean a new beginning. It can mean possibilities and hope. But it often, unfortunately, means the same stuff from the past year and past years. In fact, statistically, most New Year’s resolutions won’t last three weeks. And so, in order for us to get a more impactful new year, we need to dig a little deeper into our heart.

Everlasting Love

It’s that time of year, after the holidays simmer and we start to look at a new year, where we might begin to feel the effects of the season and weather. I know, for me, after the excitement of Christmas has passed it doesn’t take long for the long nights and the cold weather to start to take its toll on me. And that’s why it’s always so important to remind ourselves regularly of who we are in God’s eyes.

Waiting

Rarely do things go exactly as planned. I imagine by the time you read this, you’ll have had a Christmas party or event that you’ve attended. I’ve had multiple already this year and look forward to several more. And each one, as enjoyable as they can be, often doesn’t go as smoothly as we’d hope. Whether a present gets forgotten or someone gets sick or the food doesn’t come out exactly as planned. And, usually, they’re pretty small and easily overcome. But sometimes, it seems, those small frustrations can pile on top of each other.

Trust

My kids have lots of answers to many of our problems. Or at least, they strongly suggest things that would make their lives better. This week I heard the complaint about the internet being slow, again, and I reminded them that we’re waiting to get an upgrade to better service. One of the older boys asked me, very passionately, ‘Well, have you called them again to get it fixed?” I ‘calmly’ replied that I couldn’t do anything about it, we just had to wait for them to get the wiring installed and hooked up.

Peace

It’s simply amazing to me how one person, one attitude, can change the entire environment around them. It can be at a workplace, at a school, at a church or even just in our home. And, unfortunately, it often seems like negativity, criticism and frustrations often seem to overwhelm the atmosphere of a place easier than more positive dynamics.

Go

What’s most important? I wrote several weeks ago about my schedule with football and how it felt like it pulled me away from time with my kids. And as important as that is, I know football also pulled me away from other things as well. And I’m not criticizing football or any other sport, or any of the millions of other things we can spend our time doing, but the last few weeks and even months have really tested my schedule and made me really consider what was most important.

Working Together

Recently I was watching Tiktoks of a guy who thinks well outside the box. One series of his videos involved him finding a way to print and display a life-size cardboard cutout of himself in a gas station (Kum & Go) near him. Well, the nature of social media caused this simple adventure to blow up. Shortly after he set it out, he was getting comments and tags about people visiting this cutout and even lines forming to get selfies taken with it.

Thanksgiving

Most years, it seems, Thanksgiving is a holiday that simply gets swallowed up by everything else going on. Most of us probably still do something on the holiday, spending time with family and friends, eating turkey and stuffing, but it almost feels like a side-note to Christmas. In fact, many have already begun playing Christmas songs and setting up yuletide décor. And that’s fine, Christmas is important, but I also believe that Thanksgiving is very important, too.

Hard Life

Many of us could say, to a certain extent, we’ve had a hard life, right? Or at seasons of life where we’ve struggled financially, relationally, or with our addiction. In relation to others, we might not have the same struggles or the same depth of struggle that others have. But I think we all know what a hard life feels like. But there are different types of hard lives, right?

Passion

I am big proponent of personal responsibility. I try to take responsibly for my own choices and try to teach my kids the same. It amazes me that at a very young age how quickly they tell me things like “That’s not my fault!” or “That’s your fault, Dad!” It seems that most things in our house are dad’s fault and very few are my kid’s (insert eye roll emoji here).
