Matthew's Articles

Fear

It seems like some, more than others, seem to really enjoy scary movies and experiences. I remember going to the new IT: Part 1 movie in the theaters on opening weekend in a packed theater. Throughout the movie, I heard the gasps and even screams as Pennywise the Clown terrorized the small town. I enjoyed it, but not because it was scary, just because it was an interesting story. I don’t necessarily get too scared with books or movies, but, if I experienced those things in real life, that’d be a totally different story.

Fixing It

Adventures in parenting have been taken a whole new level with this stay at home order. And for me it’s been a good mix of fun games and engagements with them tied with the unavoidable frustrations with having kids around ALL DAY LONG. I just want to point out that I dearly love my kids, just so we’re clear on that. But it’s always interesting to have a mix of ages from 3 years to 13 years interacting constantly.

Persuasion

What would it take for you to go into a cage with a tiger? Is there any amount of money or a change in life’s circumstances that would cause you to take that risk? Would it be easier if you had raised that tiger since it was a kitten? Either way, I don’t think too many of us would simply do it for free. In fact, I think that it takes a unique personality and mindset to live in that world.

Abundant Life

I am rather surprised at this point we haven’t had a major viral, yet ridiculous stunt, showing up on our social media. I had assumed that with the number of people home, especially the number of bored teens, we haven’t seen something. You know, like the Tide Pod challenge or the ice bucket challenge. I fully expected to see something pop up that challenged others to compete in something of that nature.

Apocolypse

So, be honest, when we first starting to see the effects of COVID 19 here, did you start reading the book of Revelation in the Bible? Or did you at least have a thought that this might be the end of the world? Now, I’m not going to judge but I know that some (maybe even many) did and are reacting this way. It’s natural when something so large-scale that causes live-change and even death to at least consider that this might be the end of our world.

Complaints and Division

What complaints do you make when you look at the state of our world? And not just in the midst of a stay-at-home order, but, I mean, often when we look around us, we see the division, hatred, anger, fighting and all sorts of other issues. We wish the world was better. In fact, I believe it is innate in us to want unity and peace in the world around us. The problem is when we look at the chaos of the world, we also often look for the world to fix it.

Emotions in Times of Trial

Emotions are tricky, right? I mean we can have totally different emotional response to the same event, and sometimes even conflicting emotions within ourselves. And the way I understood how to deal with emotions was more pragmatic and behavioral. Basically, I learned that as long as I acted appropriately, it didn’t matter what my emotions were. So, when I felt angry, I was taught to scream into a pillow or go for a run. Or, if I was sad, it was okay to cry, but try to keep it mostly to myself.

Hello? Anyone Out There?

Hello? Hello? Anyone out there? If you’re heeding the advice of our government and health officials, you might not have seen too many people other than your family lately. And, in some ways, getting more time with our families is probably a good thing, especially in the chaotic schedules of our lives. But as you’re (hopefully) enjoying this extra time with family, remember that being alone isn’t ideal either.

Women's Roles in Life

What’s a woman’s role? That’s a discussion that can cause as much turmoil as religion or politics. Everyone has an opinion but most of us have learned to keep quiet when this issue comes up. In fact, you might even be a little uncomfortable that I’d even ask that.
But this is a topic our churches, communities and families work through regularly. And even within church denominations and our own families there can be a diversity of opinions. And it’s often tough to come to consensus on the issue.

Healthy Anger

Are you an angry person? I mean, do you get angry easily and often? Do you yell and scream when you’re angry or are you more of the ‘silent treatment’ type of angry person? Or maybe you just pretend you’re not angry and try to ‘grin and bear it’.
